Ivan Zacarias
Starting Pitcher | Free Agents
Pitching He keeps his pitches low in the strike zone and throws a heavy ball. Steals sometimes unnerve Zacarias, who isn't blessed with extraordinary self-confidence. If you're going in to face Zacarias, better be wearing plenty of protection. He's wild. You know, some times I think I can throw harder than Zacarias, and that's saying a lot. But Zacarias, do us a favor. Stop throwing that changeup. It looks like a beachball. When you throw a curveball, it better break. Hanging curves equal earned runs in this league, you just can't get away with them. Unfortunately, Zacarias's curveball tends to hang. He attacks lefties and righties with similar success.
Defense & Hitting He tends to fall off slightly to the first-base side of the mound, making him vulnerable to bunts toward third base. He makes up for that minor flaw by being aggressive in fielding his position. He doesn't have much of a pickoff move and he's slow getting the ball to home plate out of the set position. Zacarias is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Zacarias has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Free Agents have been known to use Zacarias as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2014 Outlook But if you ask me, I'll pass on Zacarias.
