Bill Thomas
Relief Pitcher | Detroit Polar Bears
Pitching He's got a really stong arm, so he can blow it by you on occasion. He's a pretty good ground-ball pitcher, which I like because ground balls stay in the park. His slider is sharp and breaks both horizontally and vertically. His curveball is solid; he throws it better than your average reliever. Thomas also has a decent changeup. No one questions this kid's heart. They do question why he just can't get it done late in the game. He attacks lefties and righties with similar success.
Defense & Hitting He has a quick pickoff move, but sometimes concentrates on pitching so much that he forgets about runners. He hurts himself by falling awkwardly off the mound in his follow-through, which allows too many balls to go through the middle for base hits. Thomas is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Thomas has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Detroit Polar Bears have been known to use Thomas as a pinch-runner on occasion.
