Fred Smith
Starting Pitcher | Houston RedNexx
Pitching Smith can get into trouble with walks, and there's concern about him being able to maintain his stuff over the whole season. His fastball gets into the high 80s, but it's the sink that makes the pitch effective. Smith also has a decent changeup. He tends to work slowly when in a jam, which just makes his problems worse by lulling his fielders to sleep. He's almost as effective against righthanders as he is versus lefthanders.
Defense & Hitting He's average in terms of controlling the running game. Smith is nothing special in the field. Smith is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Smith has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Houston RedNexx have been known to use Smith as a pinch-runner on occasion.
