Dave Herbert
Starting Pitcher | Barcelona Matadors
Pitching He is adept at coaxing groundballs with his sinking fastball and plunging curveball, so hitters try to force him to elevate his deliveries and hope that they'll catch too much of the strike zone. Herbert can get into trouble with walks, and there's concern about him being able to maintain his stuff over the whole season. Herbert also has a decent changeup. He can hit 90 MPH but is too smart to try to get his fastball past most hitters. The running movement on his pitches makes life tougher on lefties than righties.
Defense & Hitting He's reasonably quick to the plate but needs to vary his pickoff moves. Good baserunners appeared to time him last year. Herbert is nothing special in the field. Herbert is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Herbert has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Barcelona Matadors have been known to use Herbert as a pinch-runner on occasion.
