Zachariah Coumbe
Starting Pitcher | Houston RedNexx
Pitching Coumbe commands a stupefying curveball. This curve is what makes him one of the most dominant righties in the game. Coumbe's bread-and-butter pitch is a hard, two-seam fastball that rides in on righthanders' fists. Coumbe can get into trouble with walks, and there's concern about him being able to maintain his stuff over the whole season. Coumbe has to keep the ball down, especially against lefties, or he gets hit hard and often. The one thing I must say I don't like about Coumbe is how easily rattled he gets. If he makes a mistake to a hitter and the guy winds up on second or third, you can pretty much count on the guy scoring. Dating back to his days in the minors, Coumbe has been more effective against righthanders than lefthanders.
Defense & Hitting Coumbe fields his position well. His move to first base is slow and ineffective. Coumbe is a surpisingly good hitting pitcher. And I'm not sure you can say this about a pitcher, but Coumbe has some pop in his swing. Interesting sidenote, The Houston RedNexx have been known to use Coumbe as a pinch-runner on occasion.
2014 Outlook If Coumbe doesn't perform, the Houston RedNexx won't hesitate to send him down to the minors. I just don't know if The Houston RedNexx are ever going to get what they expect out of him.
