The beginning of the second decade of the Universal Baseball League brought new outcomes to the world, as the Norfolk Ninjas, twice defeated in the World Cup, knock off the mighty Roman Gladiators, who had been a perfect three for three in previous years, and Cameron Akers, who had held a 6-0 record in the World Cup. The WHL's third champion, Norfolk beat the Gladiators in seven games, winning Game Seven in Rome. Norfolk had swept Harbor, and beaten a strong Atlanta club in six games to reach the final series, after having set a WHL record with 119 wins, to become the 6th different champion in UBL history.
Norfolk once again dominated their division, finishing 43 games ahead of
second place Pittsburgh, for their 6th straight division title. The River
Rats was in the race for the Wild Card for the first couple of months,
before fading under .500 in the late summer, while the Destroyers, Demon
Dogs, and Bulldogs all hoped a year older would mean a better next year.
The Atlanta Predators had a great season of their own, reaching 114 wins,
the second best total in the WHL's history. Also like the Ninjas, Atlanta
had little competition in 2009, as the Detroit Polar Bears sold away their
aging assets mid-season, costing the team any hope for a Wild Card run
of their own. Chicago once again floundered along, waiting for something
to happen, while the Toronto Dragons got some of their promising rookies
experience in the big leagues. The Predators were both a potent offensive
and stifling defensive team, and their prize was a first round matchup
with the Western Champion Seattle Devils.
Another year, another ridiculously close race in the West. The Harbor Renegades
led the division for about 5 and a half months, the entire season except
for the last 3 weeks or so. The Devils stayed close to Harbor for much
of the year, but did fall behind Tijuana for a stretch, which caused management
to acquire George Pierce from the Detroit Polar Bears. In a mid-season
radio interview, owner Scott Weber guaranteed a division title once Pierce
put on the Devil uniform, and Pierce made good on that guarantee. The Devils
swept Harbor in the penultimate week, taking over the division lead, and
did not relinquish it, although it did take a Devils win over Harbor on
the last day of the year to clinch the title. Harbor won the Wild Card,
faced Norfolk, and was swept for their troubles. Seattle faced Atlanta
and was able to shut down the Predator offense, allowing just 8 runs, but
scored only 3 against Atlanta's formidable pitching staff, losing the series
in 4 games.
The EHL had themselves 3 100 win clubs, including the EHL Champion Roman
Gladiators. Rome was on a record setting pace for a good part of the year,
though did fall short of the all-time record of 130 wins. On the other
hand, Rome did hit the century mark for the 7th time in 8 years (2002-4,
2006-9). The Morocco Mayhem was a surprise, having dropped from 106 wins
in 2008 to just 77 this season. The Mayhem made a number of moves meant
to improve their division winning team, but as they backfired, and Rome
was running away with the division, owner Steve Webb shifted focus and
began to prepare for next season. While Stockholm and Amsterdam improved
in a year, the Alexandria Kings looked to be the most improved, as the
team continually played Rome strong, and held on to second place for a
good stretch. Even though the team faded into September, the future is
bright in the desert.
Rome faced the Western Champion Barcelona Matadors in the EHL Championship
Series, who had won their 3rd straight division title. The Mats had another
good year, falling just a couple wins short of 100, as the division finished
in the same order behind them as in 2008. The Dublin Drunks gave Barcelona
fits, staying just close enough to make owner Baggs Osgood keep one eye
over his shoulder. Barcelona faced the Eastern Champion Melbourne Beavers
in the Division Series, beating the Beavers in 5 games, before losing in
7 to the Gladiators. The Mats had a 3-2 against Rome, but could not shut
the door and advance to the Cup Finals for the first time in their history.
Melbourne took the East by one game over the fellow 100 win Berlin Hoodfellas.
A tight race between two excellent clubs, both teams were led by dangerous
offensive players and equally dangerous pitching staffs. As both the Beavers
and Hoodfellas beat up regularly on Athens and China, they were less successful
outside their division. In the postseason, Berlin was erased by Rome in
4 games, and Melbourne lost a tough series to Barcelona, a few fans were
heard to chant "Over-rated." Undoubtedly, both clubs will have something
to prove in 2010.
