The Universal Baseball League celebrated their historic 10th season with a rarity as the WHL based Atlanta Predators scored the league's second World Cup by beating the Morocco Mayhem. Not since the Chicago Windbags swept the Paris club back in 2002 (called a fluke by many EHL supporters) had the WHL hoisted the trophy, and the Predators did it in style, dismissing the 106-win Mayhem in a 6 game series. After having been pushed to the limit against Harbor (5 games) and Norfolk (7 games), Atlanta was 3-0 in Morocco to become just the 5th different champion in UBL history, and to avenge Atlanta's 4-3 loss to Stockholm in 2001.
Atlanta had a relatively easy trek through the regular season, posting
103 wins, and beating out Chicago and Detroit by 26 games, as Detroit suddenly
found their age became a factor, Chicago found out they were overmatched
and Toronto found themselves a few years away from competition. Atlanta's
mid-season trade for Frank Martin and Davey Johnson solidified an already
impressive lineup, and that offense carried the Preds past Harbor, Norfolk
and Morocco, by runs totals of 23-21, 42-29, and 26-16.
The Norfolk Dreadnoughts once again led the WHL in wins, and once again
took the Division Title over Miami and Brooklyn. Miami in particular stayed
close for a while, but fell off the pace, finishing 15 behind the 'Noughts.
The Chargers' 90 wins though were just good enough for the Wild Card berth,
one game better than the Seattle Devils. It wouldn't be a regular UBL season
without a race for the WHL Wild Card, and 2008 was no exception.
The Chargers, Devils and Renegades were all within one game of each other
heading into the final week of the year, with 2 playoff spots up for grabs.
The Harbor Renegades won their last 2 games as the Devils lost their last
2 to win their first ever Division Title, 3 games over Seattle. The Renegades
were able to battle back and forth with Seattle, San Diego and Alaska for
a good part of the year for yet another tight Western Race. Alaska slowly
traded away their team, and faded to the bottom of the division, while
San Diego stayed close but just didn't have the talent to make a serious
challenge. The Wild Card race went to the last day of the year, again,
and when Seattle lost, Miami snuck in through the back door. Both Harbor
and Miami though were unable to make it out of the 1st round, losing to
Atlanta and Norfolk respectively in 5 games.
Over in the EHL, the Morocco Mayhem toppled the Roman Empire, for one season
at least. The Mayhem won 106 to take the Central Title by 4 games. The
teams were neck-and-neck for the entire season, and Morocco simply outlasted
the Gladiators. It also subsequently featured the 3rd straight Morocco-Rome
matchup in the first round. With home field advantage this time, Morocco
took out the Gladiators in the 5th game to send Rome home for their earliest
exit since 2005.
Meanwhile, the Barcelona Matadors won their second straight EHL Western
Title, with their best ever record of 102-60. Dublin, Paris and London
all pushed the Mats for most of the season, but Barcelona's talent won
out over the long haul, slowly eliminating the contenders one by one. The
Mats faced the Berlin Hoodfellas for the 2nd straight year, making the
EHL playoffs a complete repeat from 2007. Berlin, led by Triple Crown winning
and MVP Bill Klee, won 102 games and beat out Melbourne by 11 for the Title.
The Beavers matched their record from last year, while they were in Moscow,
while the 'Fellas added 9 wins from last season. Just as in the other playoff
matchup, where Morocco avenged their loss to Rome last season, Berlin took
out the Mats this season after having lost to Barcelona in 5 in 2007. Despite
advancing to the 2nd round though, Berlin was powerless against Morocco,
getting swept and outscored 31-10.
