The Universal Baseball League in Season 9 saw the coronation of its second three-time champion. The Roman Gladiators defeated the San Diego Warlords in 4 games to win their first title since 2004. Rome became the EHL's 8th title in 9 seasons, as they also knocked off 108-win wild card Morocco Mayhem and the West Division Champion Barcelona Matadors. The Gladiators took 4 one-run contests against the Warlords, as that franchise is now 0 for 3 in the World Cup Series.
Rome found themselves alone, far ahead of even the 100 win Morocco Mayhem,
as they won 124 games and took another Central Title. The Mayhem improved
by 9 games from 2006, and yet finished a full 16 games out of first. The
were once again able to clinch the Wild Card spot, and once again Rome
was their prize in the first round. The Roman machine would not be stopped,
as they took 3 of 4, setting up the Rome-Barcelona Hemispheric Series.
There, Rome was overpowering, taking 4 of 6 with their potent offense leading
the way. The Matadors battled to the end, but just did not have enough
to defeat the Gladiators.
Barcelona surprised a few by ousting the two-time defending champion London
Clash from atop the Western Division Standings. While both Paris and London
meandered around the .500 mark for much of the year, the Matadors kept
a steady lead, as most of the UBL waited for them to blow the big lead.
The Mats had a different idea, as they held on to the lead, won the division,
and set off to face Berlin, the Eastern Division Champion, in the Division
Series. Despite being outscored 33 to 21, which included an ugly
16-1 loss, the Matadors surprised again by taking 3 of 5 from the Hoodfellas.
Berlin took charge in a suddenly super weak East, as Athens dropped from
.500 club to a near 100 loss season, and defending champion China lost
104 games. Moscow, like London, stuck near the .500 mark for a great deal
of the season, and didn't make a run until too late, cutting 6 games off
Berlin's lead in the last 10, but most well after the Hoodfellas had already
clinched.
In the Western Hemisphere, the Norfolk Dreadnoughts was the only team to
record 100 wins, as they won their fourth straight division title, and
once again there wasn't much doubt that they would repeat, despite early
challenges from Miami and Brooklyn. Meanwhile, in the West, San Diego returned
to prominance, through nothing more than better play from the same squad
that posted just 81 wins in 2006. The Warlords held off late challenges
from Seattle and Alaska to score another division title for that franchise.
Both the Central Division and the Western Wild Card featured tremendous
races. Alaska held the Wild Card lead for a good portion of the season,
until management suddenly decided to trade away talent and accumulate draft
picks. While the Kodiaks began to slip back towards the pack, Detroit and
Atlanta were mired in a see-saw battle for the best record in the Central.
The Seattle Devils found themselves out of the race in mid August before
a 15-2 run changed the landscape, and put 4 teams in a tight struggle for
just 2 playoff spots. In the last two weeks, Detroit separated themselves
enough to take one spot, but Atlanta, Seattle and Alaska were all within
1 game of each other heading into the last 6 games of the season. The Devils
were tied with the Predators with the Kodiaks a game back headed into the
last day of the season. As both Alaska and Atlanta dropped their final
games, Seattle defeated San Diego for a remarkable comeback, and a second
straight trip into the postseason.
In the WHL bracket of the postseason, there was a rematch between Seattle
and Norfolk, while San Diego faced Detroit. Both Western teams proved the
better in the Division Series, as Seattle had it's revenge on the 'Noughts,
defeating the defending WHL Champs in 4 games. The Warlords needed 5 games,
but eliminated Detroit in another early exit for the Central club. The
Western showdown between San Diego and Seattle didn't live up to billing,
as the Warlords dominated the Devils in 5 games, including the back-breaking
3rd game, in which the Warlords scored 5 times in the ninth to demoralize
the Devs and effectively end their season.
