The Roman Gladiators became just the second team in UBL history to win back-to-back Championships, taking out the surprise Caracas Cougars 4 games to 1. The Cameron Akers' run club followed the example of Akers' Stockholm franchise, winning their second title in team history, trailing only Stockholm's 3. Rome did not leave much doubt in the minds of baseball fans everywhere, taking the first three games and leaving the Cougars, and owner Ritch Beatz, hoping a sweep was not forthcoming. The Gladiators only lost 2 games en route to the Cup, sweeping Wild Card Paris, and taking 4 of 5 from EHL East Champs London. Caracas continued its cinderella run from Wild Card to World Cup runner-up by beating WHL Western Champs Alaska 3-1, and WHL Eastern Champs Norfolk 4-2.
Just as Rome dominated in the postseason, the Gladiators were unstoppable
in the regular season, going 120-42, winning the Central crown by 31 games
over Stockholm. While three teams in the Central finished with under
70 wins, the newly renamed Laser Beams had a consistent and strong season,
finishing just 1 game behind in the Wild Card standings. Things were
almost as lopsided in the EHL East, as Warsaw started slow, but took possession
of first at the start of June from the early surprise Berlin, and finished
17 games up. The five-year plan Moscow Communists struggled in "year
3," but good things are on the horizon.
The UBL's sixth season did feature four exciting ends to postseason races
in the remaining divisions, leaving few things settled until the last outs
were recorded. In the EHL West, Paris, Barcelona and Edinburgh staged
a furious three team race in the first half of the season, with a floundering
London club a few steps back in fourth place. However, between July
6 and August 9, London went 22-6 to pull to within just one game of Paris.
The two clubs put a couple games between themselves and the Mats and Clansmen,
see-sawing over one another for much of the last month until finally London
found themselves improbable Western Champs. Paris' season was not
for naught, as they were able to beat out Stockholm for the Wild Card by
just one game.
Over in the Western Hemisphere, the best record belonged to the Alaska
Kodiaks, who played .667 ball over the second half, going from 48-39 to
98-64 and another Western Title. While Los Angeles again floundered on
the bottom of the standings, Seattle struggled to reach .500, but failed
thanks to a horrendous record against the division rival Kodiaks, and Mexico
City stayed in the division and wild card hunt until a 12-17 start to the
second half ended those hopes. The Caracas Cougars, on the other
hand, had a strong second half, surprising most, to leap over the Bulls
and eventually into the playoffs as the Wild Card team by just two games.
The WHL Central Division featured a strong Atlanta Hammers squad that was
10 to 20 games over five hundred for most of the last four months of the
season, with little or no competition from their rivals, as Toronto struggled
at and below .500, and Chicago faded quickly in the second half.
However a 19-4 stretch in late August by the Detroit Polar Bears vaulted
the club over Atlanta into first place for a brief spell, before they ran
out of steam and fell back to earth, a full five back. The race caused
some worried looks in Georgia, but nothing like what happened in the WHL
East.
Three teams gave UBL fans all they could handle as far as pennant races
go, as Norfolk, Miami and Columbus raced neck and neck for the entire season
for first place. All three teams took a turn atop the standings,
constantly switching places, yet never falling more than five games out
before closing the distance. The race hit a peak on September 3rd,
when there was a three way tie at 71-61. Miami had a better start
to September than the other two clubs, and looked like they might outlast
their rivals, before the dropped nine straight to close out the year, falling
from first place to third, just two back. Columbus gave it everything
they had as well, but a Norfolk victory on the penultimate day of the season
gave the Dreadnoughts their first ever division title.
